In many places around the world, the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women are tenuous at best, and years of progress can be washed away instantly by socio-political changes. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we must remember that preserving—or reclaiming— the dignity of girls and women requires continuous efforts, even when it seems like the battle is already won.

On 5th and 6th March ACCAF held a training workshop in Mauche Njoro County to train medical practitioners on the effects and management of FGM/C. the expected outcome of the workshop included,

1. To expound on FGM knowledge,

2. To identify alternatives of FGM and its complications,

3. To know how to handle women who have undergone FGM and those who haven’t.

On 20th February 2015, ACCAF hosted a panel discussion during the 39th Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society and the 1st Annual African Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists. The conference boasted of numerous representatives from countries around the globe. The discussion focused on presenting a checklist for monitoring anti-FGM/C activities.

  FGM is still a thorny issue in many societies as more women still suffer the scourge of the practice. The practice is now growing shoots in the European countries due to the large number of immigrants flowing into their territories. To preserve their identities most of them still want to maintain their cultural practices one of them is Female Genital Mutilation/ Cutting. According to UNICEF Europe accounts for 5% of the millions of women and girls affected. Because of this the European union has seen the need to address  the issue and find solutions to end the practice.

ACCAF held a training workshop in Nakuru that drew together 29 health care providers from five counties - Narok, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot and Baringo - that are part of the target counties for FGM/C abandonment in UNFPA-UNICEF Joint 8th Country programme. The workshop aimed at sensitizing health care providers on the medicalization of FGM/C, sourcing their experiences, and understanding their role in accelerating the abandonment of FGM/C.
