TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS ON DE-MEDICALIZATION OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION/CUTTING

ACCAF held a training workshop in Nakuru that drew together 29 health care providers from five counties - Narok, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot and Baringo - that are part of the target counties for FGM/C abandonment in UNFPA-UNICEF Joint 8th Country programme. The workshop aimed at sensitizing health care providers on the medicalization of FGM/C, sourcing their experiences, and understanding their role in accelerating the abandonment of FGM/C.

ACCAF is in Mauche Nakuru County holding a consultative workshop on healthcare and preventive measures for female genital mutilation. The workshop has brought about Chiefs, Community leaders, Pastors, Youth Leaders, and Teachers from the community. The community had seen a re-emergence of the practice hence ACCAF has been working since March this year to help stem the practice. The church had been working towards ending the practice with great success but a number of factors particularly inter tribal clashes has influenced its re-emergence.

Prof. Jaldesa Guyo ACCAF coordinator is currently in India attending the 2nd Men Engage global symposium 2014. The symposium brought about researchers and practitioners, advocates and activists, government representatives and the donor community to share experiences, evidence and insights and seek direction on how men and boys can creatively contribute to gender equality. Involvement of men is key in the fight against FGM as they are also indirectly involved.

Commemoration of Zero Tolerance day on FGM
